Biodiversity & Competitiveness in the Food System — A new Kost Studio publication

Kost Studio publishes a new catalogue to spark conversations on biodiversity and competitiveness in the food system.

Biodiversity loss is ranked as the second greatest threat to our global economy, and the primary driver behind it is the food system itself. The way we produce food is degrading the very ecosystem services it depends on: healthy soils, pollination, pest control, and water regulation. But reversing that loss while staying competitive is far from straightforward. That tension is exactly what this catalogue sets out to explore.

It is greatly recognised that biodiversity is fundamental to the long-term health of the food system. However, biodiversity itself can be difficult to fully grasp and it can be difficult to know where to start.

That is what this catalogue wants to change. By breaking down the basics and mapping the common arguments, we hope to lower the threshold for more actors across the food industry to engage with the topic and join the conversation.

The catalogue is structured in two parts:

In the first part, Fundamentals, we cover what biodiversity actually means in the context of the food system: the current state of biodiversity in Denmark, how we got here, and what farming for biodiversity can look like in practice.

In the second part, Arguments of the debate, we turn to the core tension between biodiversity and competitiveness. Drawing on our research, we map the structural barriers that stand in the way of change and the economic arguments that make the case for it.

This catalogue is more than a publication. It's part of a broader effort to create space for interdisciplinary dialogue and action. Through networking events, workshops, and resources like this, we're working to connect researchers, entrepreneurs, and food professionals to rethink the future of food together.

This catalogue is created through the Interdisciplinary Future Food Network, funded by GUDP under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.
