Supporting Region Sjælland and Lolland-Falster in building a strategy for robust local food systems

May 16, 2025

Region Sjælland and Business Lolland-Falster have taken on a mission to be in the forefront of establishing a robust local food system. We applaud their efforts as there are good reasons for our climate and health to do so. We wrote a white paper to map the barriers and support their work in shaping a strategy going forward.

We were commissioned by Fødevarealliancen to white a paper to paint the picture of the current barriers and potentials in strengthening their local, seasonal green food production.

Fødevarealliancen is an initiative under Region Zealand and Business Lolland-Falster to promote sustainable, local food production and consumption. They bring together a diverse range of stakeholders—including farmers, food producers, chefs, researchers, public institutions, and policymakers—to collaborate on transforming the regional food system.

The white book covers:

- Good reasons to scale up production of local, seasonal foods

- Barriers across the value chain to scale up production of local, seasonal foods

- Crucial questions of discussions for politicians and other stakeholders going forward

- Suggestions of adjustment points for the future

“If the benefits of strengthening the security of the Danish food supply are to be realized, we need serious action, targeted efforts, and—not least—insight into the landscape of barriers across the value chain.”

The critical challenges going forward:

Economic imbalance — There’s a fundamental mismatch between production costs and the prices producers receive. High risks and costs are not reflected in the market price, leaving farmers with little incentive to invest or scale.

Lack of long-term commitment from the public sector — Promising public initiatives to introduce more local greens into institutional kitchens often don’t come further than the pilot phase. Barriers like pricing, logistics, and competing priorities prevent long-term success.

Food supply security under pressure — Competition for land is intensifying. Rising land prices and pressure from other crops challenge Denmark’s self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables.
